Footpaths

E-mail Print PDF

Brede has a good number of footpaths and ESCC do their best to keep them open. A fantastic new resource, an online definitive map is now available at the ESCC website. There is also a zoomable online OS Map here but that is not the definitive map.

Sussex Ramblers and Rother Ramblers organise local walks and more details can be found at their respective sites. There is also an active Sussex Young Walkers Group for those aged between 25 and 45

If you find that a path has been blocked or diverted, please report it as soon as possible to ESCC Footpaths Officers:

A list of all current temporary closures is maintained by ESCC on their website - these are permitted closures, rather than obstructed paths.

By law, farmers are allowed to overplough paths, but must within 14 days make good the surface and indicate clearly the line of the path, so as to make it reasonably convenient for the public to use the right of way. The restoration of the surface must extend over a minimum width of:

  • 1 metre for a cross-field path
  • 1.5 metres for a headland path (though it should not be necessary for these to be ploughed at all)
  • 2 metres for a cross-field bridleway
  • 3 metres for a field-edge bridleway
  • 3 metres for any carriageway
If a path is obstructed by crops or has been ploughed over, please report it either to the ESCC Rights of Way Team or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it and we will pass on the details.

ESCC have a leisure walk guide around Broad Oak and Brede, which can be downloaded here. Last, but far from least, there are miles of tracks in the beautiful Brede High Woods (including a public footpath) which is a haven for wildlife and lovely at all times of the year.
