Brede Scouting

E-mail Print PDF

We all had a brilliant Christmas and when we returned, after the New Year, we had a few new Cubs who had come up from Beavers and even a new Leader. I am known as Hathi (the elephant in the Jungle Book) and will be joining Akela & Baloo every Monday (term time only) 6.30 - 8pm. Since we've returned we've had an evening of games just to help us all get to know the new ones, an evening working towards our Road Safety badge, one making Chinese food, for Chinese New Year, one playing Scottish games andtrying neeps & tatties for Burns Night!

We've been bridge building, map reading and there's lots more fun to come, including a visit from the local Police and a visit to the Fire Station!! There was a fantastic hike planned in February with the rest of the District which was brilliant fun and an upcoming celebration of the Olympics 2012, not to mention working with the community for the Golden Jubilee. We're going to have so much fun. If you want to take part (even if you're an adult!) then call Colin on 07980 171877 or Rhiannon Oliver on 01424 882037. We even have a Facebook Page, so please come & join us.

Star Count Week

E-mail Print PDF

If you took part in the CPRE's Star Count Week - 20th to 27th January 2012 - organised with the British Astronomical Society, you were helping them to find out which part of the country has the darkest skies and where the most stars can be seen. The results will help them highlight the problem of light pollution which is spoiling the natural beauty of the night sky. Brede is far from immune - indeed the problem of security lamps left on all night is increasing, particularly at business premises.

Why does light pollution spoil our view of the stars?
Astronomer Darren Baskill, from the University of Sussex, explains why it is a problem and what can be done in this slideshow.

What you can do to help reduce light pollution
