No Such Thing as a Dog Poo Fairy

E-mail Print PDF

In Brede High Woods, the problem of dog fouling is particularly bad and consitutes a real hazard to children. Dog fouling is not only unpleasant - it is dangerous. The biggest threat to public health from dog excrement is toxocariasis - an infection of the roundworm toxocara canis. Symptoms include eye disorders (including blindness), vague fairy_binsticker_2450ache, dizziness, nausea, asthma and epileptic fits.

Often the eggs are ingested when passed to the mouth by the hands, but this can also occur through contact with dogs or other inanimate objects including the wheels of toys and the soles of shoes. This is the main reason that dogs are banned on Broad Oak Recreation Ground. It is the responsibility of the dog owner or the person in charge of the dog to clear up any dog foul left by their dog. If you fail to clean up after your dog you can be issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice, or if the case goes to court a fine of up to £1000. The regulations state specifically, that being unaware that the dog has fouled, or not having a suitable means of removing the faeces is not a reasonable excuse for failing to clean up after your dog.

Nobody is employed to collect unprotected dog poop or that which has been placed in bags and then hung from trees or left by the entrance to the woods. So Please... Pick Up After Your Dog... and Take it Home,
